The Body: Food For Supporting Treatment (Part 2)

My mum asked me a little while ago to email her an easy-to-follow guide to the diet I kept during chemo.

I want to share with you exactly what I shared with her…

“Dear Mum,

Top-line: I ate a whole foods (aka food from the earth), whole grains (aka no white carbs), organic (where possible), Mediterranean-style, vegetable-focused diet 🥦🍆🍑🥜🫐🍐🧄

I tried to decrease my intake of sugary foods but also – we are human and it’s a shit time – so I stopped myself from obsessing over that and I wasn’t too restrictive, although I barely drank alcohol during my treatment.

These foods are good for their anti-inflammatory & anti-oxidant properties:

  • Nuts (especially walnuts, almonds) 🥜
  • Seeds (especially pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds) 🌰
  • Oily fish🐟
  • Berries (inc blueberries, strawberries)🫐
  • Leafy greens (spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale)🥬
  • Ginger & Garlic 🧄
  • Tomatoes 🍅
  • Olive oil 🫒

These food are good for your gut microbiome and overall health:

  • Kombucha 🧉
  • Kefir yoghurt 🥛
  • Anything fermented 🥒
  • (Careful not to eat live things though during chemo)

These are foods that have ‘anti-cancer’ qualities:

  • Green tea 🍵
  • Turmeric 🧡
  • Mushrooms 🍄
  • Beetroot 💜
  • Leafy greens 🥬
  • Dates 🤎
  • Pomegranate ❤️
  • Cherries 🍒
  • Asparagus 🌱

Foods I avoided in great quantities as they are not healing foods nor have much nutritional value:

  • Alcohol 🍻
  • Sugar 🍬
  • White flour 🍞
  • Refined carbs 🍪
  • Fried foods 🍟

I recommend having fresh green juices and having a smoothie filled with as much of the above each morning.”

I hope this helps
